Hermann Kesten-Awards 2016

The Translate for Justice team received the Hermann Kesten Incentive Award 2016 by the German PEN Center. The awards ceremony took place on November 17th at the Staatstheater Darmstadt, Germany. The Turkish journalists Can Dündar and Erdem Gül were awarded this year’s Hermann Kesten Medal.

The laudatio of Can Dündar und Erdem Gül was held by the former “Tagesthemen” host Thomas Roth; the lyricist and translator Hans Thill gave the laudatio for Translate for Justice. We feel very honoured.

Here are some impressions of this inspiring evening.

Barış Özkul

The director of state theatres, Nejat Birecik, announced that in the beginning of this year’s season only “local and national” plays will be put on stage. Plays by Shakespeare, Chekov, Brecht and Dario Fo are not supposed to be staged in theatres. The announcement is as follows: “In order to reinforce national and moral feelings, we, as humanist and nationalist artists, open the curtains with only local plays for the purpose of contributing to the nation’s unity and integrity.”[1] (more…)

This country will not be healed unless the victory against the coup d’état goes beyond that of formal democracy, and becomes the victory of the secularism, which is the sine qua non of democracy itself. (more…)

Call to join solidarity action in support of Aslı Erdoğan

Aslı Erdoğan — human rights activist and award-winning novelist whose work has been translated into fifteen languages — is facing charges of ‘membership of a terrorist organization’ and ‘undermining the national unity and integrity of the state.’ Erdoğan, a columnist and a member of the Özgür Gündem newspaper’s ‘symbolic’ advisory board, was detained following raids on her apartment last week. Although many of her colleagues were released, Erdoğan was arrested together with the newspaper’s editor-in-chief Zana Kaya and newsroom editor İnan Kızılkaya.

As Aslı’s friends, we started a vigil in front of Bakırköy Women’s Prison on the 22nd of August 2016. Now, we are asking you to send us your short pieces to support a column called ‘Aslı’s friends’, which is to be published for Özgürlükçü Demokrasi, the daily that replaced Özgür Gündem, now defunct. We will be publishing supporting messages in this column until Aslı is free again. Those who want to support this cause can write to the e-mail address: aslininarkadaslari@gmail.com.

Aslı Erdoğan is not alone!
