Aslı Erdoğan — human rights activist and award-winning novelist whose work has been translated into fifteen languages — is facing charges of ‘membership of a terrorist organization’ and ‘undermining the national unity and integrity of the state.’ Erdoğan, a columnist and a member of the Özgür Gündem newspaper’s ‘symbolic’ advisory board, was detained following raids on her apartment last week. Although many of her colleagues were released, Erdoğan was arrested together with the newspaper’s editor-in-chief Zana Kaya and newsroom editor İnan Kızılkaya.
As Aslı’s friends, we started a vigil in front of Bakırköy Women’s Prison on the 22nd of August 2016. Now, we are asking you to send us your short pieces to support a column called ‘Aslı’s friends’, which is to be published for Özgürlükçü Demokrasi, the daily that replaced Özgür Gündem, now defunct. We will be publishing supporting messages in this column until Aslı is free again. Those who want to support this cause can write to the e-mail address: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Aslı Erdoğan is not alone!
